FAAC Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide

We repair and replace FAAC keypads and intercom systems throughout Long Beach, typically for $240 to $520 installed, and we usually have the common FAAC keypad and intercom parts on the truck for same-day service. Most people discover the failure the hard way: the keypad stops accepting the code they’ve used for years, or the intercom rings but the voice comes through as static so bad you can’t tell who’s at the gate. Sometimes it’s the keypad itself, sometimes it’s the wiring run between the keypad and the FAAC control board, and knowing which one failed is the difference between a $180 fix and a $500 replacement.

We’re an independent gate repair company, not affiliated with or sponsored by FAAC. We stock FAAC-compatible keypads, intercom modules, and wiring harnesses because FAAC is one of the nine brands we’re factory-trained on, and because Long Beach has a lot of FAAC systems still running strong after 15 or 20 years. You’ll want a tech who knows the brand’s quirks, not someone who’s going to Google the model number in your driveway.

Which FAAC Models This Applies To

FAAC has been building gate operators and access control systems since 1965, and over the decades they’ve released several distinct keypad and intercom lines. The most common ones we see in Long Beach are the FAAC 404, 415, and 412 operator lines paired with FAAC’s XK series keypads and their modular intercom panels, but we also service the older DigiKey, E-Series, and 2-EASY keypads and the standalone audio intercoms that wire directly into the control board.

The single biggest compatibility gotcha with FAAC keypads is the wiring protocol. FAAC switched from a simple dry-contact wiring scheme to a BUS (2-wire) protocol on their newer models around 2010. A keypad wired for the older protocol will not work on a newer FAAC board, and vice versa. If your keypad has four or five wires, it’s dry-contact. If it has two wires, it’s BUS. This is exactly the kind of detail that separates a correct repair from a return trip, and it’s the reason we carry both types on the truck.

When you call, the two fastest ways to help us identify your part are: 1) tell us the model number printed on the back of the keypad or the inside of the intercom housing, and 2) tell us the color and number of wires behind the keypad. If the label has worn off from sun exposure, which happens a lot in Long Beach, we can usually ID the part from a photo of the keypad face and the connector.

On the OEM versus aftermarket question: for keypads specifically, we prefer OEM or direct-equivalent FAAC parts. The reason is radio frequency interference and weather sealing. FAAC keypads in coastal Long Beach are dealing with salt air and marine layer moisture, and cheap knockoff keypads fail at the membrane within a year or two. For intercoms, a quality aftermarket speaker module can work well, but the mounting footprint must match, and most aftermarket kits don’t include the right gasket. We’ll tell you honestly when a less expensive part will do the job and when it won’t.

Signs Your FAAC Keypad or Intercom Is Failing

  • Keypad accepts the code but the gate doesn’t move. This usually means the keypad is sending the signal but the relay or BUS communication to the FAAC control board is dead. The keypad itself may be fine; the wiring or the board input may be the real problem.
  • Some buttons work, some don’t, or you have to press hard. The membrane or tactile switches inside the keypad are worn out. This is progressive; buttons fail one at a time. In coastal Long Beach, salt air accelerates membrane degradation.
  • Intercom rings at the house but the voice is garbled or missing entirely. This points to a failing speaker or microphone module, or corrosion on the wiring terminals. FAAC intercoms are not fully sealed units, and moisture intrusion at the gasket is the usual culprit.
  • Keypad backlight flickers or stays dark. The backlight draws very little current, so a flicker often means a failing voltage regulator inside the keypad or a weak power feed from the control board. Intermittent power to a keypad can also corrupt its stored codes.
  • Code resets itself or extra digits appear when you type. This is typically a failing microcontroller or corrupt memory inside the keypad. It will not fix itself, and the next failure is usually total loss of code acceptance.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Long Beach, a full FAAC keypad replacement typically runs $240 to $380 installed, including the part, labor, programming, and a written price before any work starts. A FAAC intercom replacement typically runs $380 to $520 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the entire unit or just the speaker/microphone module, and whether we need to pull new wire from the house to the gate.

What drives the price range: wiring condition, mounting surface prep, whether this is a dry-contact or BUS system, and the specific FAAC model. If the existing wiring is in good shape and the mounting box is intact, the job is straightforward and lands at the low end. If we’re chasing corroded terminals or replacing wire runs through a long driveway, the labor goes up.

Every repair at Warden Gate Repair Long Beach includes a written price before any work begins. You’ll know the number before we touch a screwdriver, and the number on the invoice matches the number on the quote. We also back every FAAC keypad and intercom repair with our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the repair fails within a year, we return and fix it free. That’s the whole job, not parts only.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s our honest take as the people who do this all day in Long Beach. If your keypad or intercom is dead and you’re handy with a multimeter, there are two things you can safely check: that the wiring connections at the keypad are tight and free of green corrosion, and that the FAAC control board has power (a lit status LED confirms it). Those two checks cost nothing and can rule out the simplest problems.

What we do not recommend is opening the FAAC control board enclosure to test or re-wire the keypad or intercom terminals. The board carries line voltage even when the gate operator is switched off, and the BUS wiring on newer FAAC systems is polarity-sensitive. Reversing those two wires can damage the board, which turns a $300 keypad repair into a $900 board replacement. If you’re not certain, call us at (562) 512-6788 and describe what the gate is doing. Cole Rafferty and the crew will tell you over the phone whether it sounds like a simple fix or a service call, and we won’t charge you for the conversation.
