Get your free estimateElite Access Control Installation: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide
Elite access control installation in Long Beach typically runs $850 to $2,400 installed, depending on which Elite system you have and whether we’re adding keypads, card readers, or telephone entry. We stock Elite-compatible access control parts on our trucks and can usually schedule installation within 2 to 4 business days. Most Long Beach owners call us after the keypad stops recognizing codes, the card reader goes dark, or the system won’t release the gate even though the operator itself still runs fine.
The access control installation is the brain of your gate system. It’s the keypad, card reader, or phone entry unit mounted near the driveway that tells the gate operator when to open and close. When it fails, your gate either won’t open at all, opens for everyone, or ignores every code you punch in. Here’s what you need to know to get the right Elite part matched to your system and installed correctly the first time.
Which Elite Models This Applies To
Elite’s access control line spans their SL-series slide gate operators, CSW-series swing gate operators, and the stand-alone Elite keypads and card readers that pair with them. The Elite SL-3000 and CSW-200 are the two we see most often in Long Beach driveways, though we service the full Elite line. Identifying your exact model matters because Elite changed wiring harnesses and control board pinouts between production runs over the years.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that catches people: an Elite keypad that works with a 2018 SL-3000 may not talk to a 2023 SL-3000UL without a firmware update or a different interface module. The UL listing isn’t just a sticker; in California, it often signals a different control board revision. If you’re holding an Elite part you bought online, we can tell you in about five minutes whether it’ll actually work with your operator before you pay an hour of labor trying.
On OEM versus aftermarket: for Elite specifically, we recommend OEM control boards and the factory keypads where the budget allows. The aftermarket universal keypads work for basic open/close commands, but they skip Elite’s two-wire data protocol features like per-code scheduling and audit logging. If all you want is four-digit entry, an aftermarket Wiegand keypad is fine and saves you $100 to $200. If you want the full Elite feature set, stay OEM. We stock both and we’ll show you the written price difference before any work starts.
We’re an independent gate and access control service company. We’re not affiliated with Elite, but we’re factory-trained on their equipment, which means we know their boards, their wiring, and their quirks without consulting a manual at every step.

Signs Your Elite Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad accepts your code but the gate doesn’t move. This usually means the keypad itself is fine but the relay on the access control board isn’t closing, or the wiring between the keypad and the operator has a short. We trace the signal with a meter before we swap any parts.
- Card reader beeps but won’t grant access. The reader is reading the card but the system isn’t matching it to an authorized credential. Sometimes it’s a corrupted card database; other times the reader’s Wiegand output has drifted out of spec. Either way, it’s repairable in most cases.
- Keypad goes dark with no display. That’s a power supply issue. The transformer feeding the keypad is often the first thing to fail, especially in Long Beach where salt air from the coast accelerates corrosion on outdoor electrical components.
- Gate opens for every code, even wrong ones. This is the scary one. It means the access control board has defaulted to its factory settings and lost its programming. Your gate is now open to anyone who walks up and presses buttons.
- Intermittent operation: works Tuesday, dead Wednesday. Classic bad ground or a failing relay. These are the calls where someone has already tried three new parts and it’s still acting up. It’s almost always a wiring or grounding fault, not a board fault.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For an Elite access control installation in Long Beach, here’s what we quote:
- Keypad replacement (OEM Elite): $120 – $350 part, plus $150 – $250 labor
- Keypad replacement (quality aftermarket): $60 – $150 part, plus $150 – $250 labor
- Card reader add-on (single door/gate): $180 – $400 part, plus $200 – $300 labor
- Full telephone entry system with keypad: $600 – $1,400 part, plus $250 – $600 labor
- Complete access control panel overhaul with new board, transformer, and surge protection: $850 – $1,600 installed
The range on labor comes down to how much wire needs replacing and whether we’re working with an existing Elite enclosure or running new conduit. Parts-plus-labor is how we quote, never a crossed-out “today only” number. The price you approve is the price you pay. Every repair carries the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the access control installation fails within a year, the return visit is free, no fine print.
Cole Rafferty, our Owner and Lead Technician, still writes every service quote by hand before it’s typed up, a habit from his early days that keeps him from skipping the details. You’ll get a written price before we touch a screwdriver.
DIY or Call Us?
What you can safely check yourself: verify the keypad has power by looking for a lit display or a beep on keypress, check for a tripped GFCI outlet or breaker that feeds the access control transformer, and look for visible water damage or corrosion inside the keypad housing. Those three checks solve a surprising number of “dead keypad” calls in Long Beach, especially after the winter rains we get.
What you should not DIY: anything involving the control board wiring, the operator’s low-voltage inputs, or the 120V line side of the transformer. These are electrical components tied to a gate that can move hundreds of pounds without warning. A miswired access control board can also leave your gate permanently open, which defeats the entire point of having a gate. If you’ve done the basic checks and it’s still dead, call us at (562) 512-6788 and tell us exactly what the gate is doing, or not doing, and we’ll tell you exactly what it needs.
FAQs
An Elite OEM keypad in a coastal Long Beach installation typically lasts 7 to 10 years before the membrane keys start failing or the board corrodes. Units mounted within a quarter mile of the water often last 5 to 7 years because salt air works on the contacts and connectors year-round. If your keypad is pushing 9 years old and acting up, replacement usually costs less than chasing intermittent faults.
Sometimes, yes. If the failure is a visible blown capacitor, a fried relay, or a corroded connector on an Elite board, we can often repair it for $80 to $200 plus labor. If the microprocessor is dead or the board has multiple failed traces, replacement is the honest answer. We’ll show you the damaged board and explain what we’re seeing before we recommend anything. Call (562) 512-6788 and we’ll tell you what a repair versus replacement looks like for your specific Elite model.
A straight keypad or card reader swap on an existing Elite system takes 45 minutes to 2 hours. A full panel overhaul with new wiring runs 3 to 5 hours. We quote the time honestly before we start, and we don’t leave until the gate cycles correctly using the new access control.
We keep OEM Elite keypads, the most common Elite control boards, transformers, and Wiegand card readers on our trucks for immediate installation. For less common Elite parts, we order direct and typically have them in hand within 3 to 5 business days. If you need a part we don’t have on hand, we’ll tell you the lead time before you commit to anything.
